July 30, 2006 : Caltex Lubricants Lanka Limited in partnership with the Eyecare Foundation Sri Lanka sponsored a two phase Mobile Eye Clinic in south of the country to assist victims of the affected 2004 devastating tsunami. This mobile clinic is the first of its kind to be conducted in the area of Hikkaduwa facilitating free eye care treatment and advice for its residents
In the first phase of this programme, close to 450 participants were examined by a group of doctors from Hikkaduwa and Galle providing on site treatment for infections and other eye ailments and supplied individuals with medicine and other resources available to the eye care foundation. The participants were also examined by reputed ophthalmologists for customised spectacles which were distributed at the second phase of the programme.
The Eyecare Foundation which was initiated in January 2005 was set up to assist the victims of the devastating tsunami and later introduced to all part of the country to provide assistance to individuals with general eye problems. The foundation has successfully organised a number of such mobile clinics in Galle, Kataragama and Hambantota encouraging over thousands to visit these camps and receive assistance for eye problems. The unit is operated on the volunteer strength of trained optometrists directed by reputed ophthalmologists and eye surgeons.
Subsequent to this programme, Caltex in Sri Lanka together with the Eye Care Foundation plan to conduct a number of similar such eye clinic around the country.
